DAMASCUS (Staff Report) – The Syrian military officials on Sunday morning claimed that government’s forces have recaptured the city of Palmyra from fighters of Islamic State militant group.
The Syrian forces were also backed jets of Russian Air Force in the combat that lasted for days.
According to media reports, gunfire could still be heard from several locations -a possible indication of clearance operation. There is no information available about the fighters of ISIS/ISIL/IS/Da’aish to have fled the city or killed.
Palmyra -called bride of the desert- was one of the key Syrian cities that fell to Islamic State group in May last year. The city was home to several historic site but reports suggested that the militant group had demolished most of them during its rule.
This is first major success of Syrian forces since Russia announced withdrawal of its forces after a five-month-long military operation to support President Bashar al-Asad’s government.
