320 female students expelled from Minhaj University hostel in Lahore

LAHORE – As many as 320 female students of Idara Minhaj ul Quran have been expelled from the university’s hostel days after they were barred from leaving the premises.

The expulsion comes in result of a notice by the hostel in-charge, Khuram Nawaz Gandapur, for them to leave the hostel before May 31.

Parents of the expelled students have demanded the university’s administration to reconsider their decision and allow the pupils to stay in hostels.

Sources told Daily Pakistan that the students had to face harsh punishment after a leaked video of Gandapur went viral in which he was seen abusing and threatening the students at the university hostel for asking to go out after iftari.

In the video, the secretary general of Dr Tahirul Qadri’s Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) can be seen scolding the students and teaching them some “manners”. Gandapur also threatened one student by saying, “You will either tell me the name of the girl who was speaking to you or go home tonight.”

When asked for comment, Gandapur explained that some of the varsity students insisted on going out after sunset which is a clear violation of the hostel’s rules. “Every student has given it in writing that they will not go out of the hostel after sunset without the male escorts or family members,” he added.

He further said that the girls had ‘manhandled’ the hostel staff and created disturbance before he was called in to diffuse the situation. Gandapur recalled, “At first, I requested politely and asked them to tell their problems one by one but they didn’t listen at all. We have a strict policy in our hostel and it is our priority to ensure the security of these girls.”

The PAT leader also warned that disciplinary action would be taken against the students who violated rules. “If someone wants to go out after sunset then they can ask their parents to shift them to any other hostel where such actions are allowed,” he suggested.

According to the sources privy to the whole episode, the issue arose due to miscommunication between the officials of the hostel as an application for the iftar party inside the university had already been forwarded to the Vice Chancellor, and apparently Gandapur was not kept in the loop by the administration.

The rude behaviour of PAT leader prompted concerns among the students of the university who staged a protest on campus, the following day.
