IHC summons medical records of Nawaz Sharif

ISLAMABAD – The Islamabad High Court on Monday has summoned the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) and the Superintendent of Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail as it took up a petition of disgraced prime minister Nawaz Sharif, who has sought his release from prison on medical grounds.

The two-member bench, comprising Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani, ordered to submit the former PM’s medical records while adjourning the hearing till February 6.

Sharif, 69, filed the petition through his counsel, Khawaja Haris Ahmed, before the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Saturday.

The petition seeks suspension of the seven-year sentence awarded to the ex-PM by accountability court Judge Mohammad Arshad Malik in the Al-Azizia/Hill Metal Establishment case.

This petition, however, is different from an earlier identical petition since it seeks the release of the former premier on medical grounds.

It cited the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) chairman, the accountability judge and the Kot Lakhpat jail’s superintendent as respondents.

The new petition contended that “the petitioner has now come to know that the appeal and Writ petition filed by him have been fixed by the office for Feb 18”.

According to the plea, Sharif felt pain in both his arms and numbness of toes. Given his medical history, the matter was reported to the jail superintendent who referred him for medical examination to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology, Lahore, and the Allama Iqbal Medical College/Jinnah Hospital, Lahore.

On Sunday Sharif’s personal doctor Dr Adnan Khan said that deliberately or unknowingly delay in the treatment of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo can risk his health.

In his twitter message, Dr Adnan said that the medical evaluation of Nawaz Sharif remains incomplete. Neither he was admitted to hospital nor was he being given better treatment.

He also stressed the need for further medical management.

Sharif’s counsel, Khawaja Haris has told the IHC bench that he is yet to receive the medical report of his client.
