Chiniot minerals scandal: Punjab govt persuades NAB to probe ‘corruption in PML-Q tenure’

LAHORE – The Lahore bureau of Pakistan’s anti-corruption body has been tasked to probe the alleged corruption and irregularities done by the PML-Q led government in awarding the contract of vast mineral reserves in Chiniot to a fake company.

National Accountability Bureau Chairman Justice Javed Iqbal on Monday ordered the DG NAB-Lahore to see “why the case wasn’t taken seriously earlier,” sources confided to Daily Pakistan.

“The NAB Lahore has also been directed to ascertain the reasons behind closing the inquiry so that the responsibility could be fixed and an action be taken against the responsible officers. The guidance could be sought from the decisions of the high court and Supreme Court,” the sources in NAB added.

The reserves were allotted to the company without a competitive bidding during the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid government in Punjab, run by ex-CM Chaudhary Pervez Elahi. As per the agreement, 80 percent profit from this national asset was to go to EPRL – a firm neither registered nor had it any office in Pakistan at the time of the signing of the agreement.
