ISLAMABAD — The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has decided to extend the deadline for cellular users to register their mobile devices with the authority.
In a text message sent to mobile phone users, the telecommunication authority has warned that non-compliant devices will not work after January 15.
How to register mobile phone
The status of any GSM devices can be check by sending an SMS containing IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number to 8484.
IMEI can be checked by dialing *#06#.
In response, PTA will send a reply confirming whether the device is compliant or not.

Last month, Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry had announced that all smuggled mobile phones will be blocked by PTA.
The decision has been made to curb the mobile phones smuggling, which is damaging the national economy.

During the financial year 2017-18 Pakistan has imported mobile phones worth of $847.66 million and in the previous financial year the import bill exceeded $1 billion, however, there was no duty on imports from China under the free trade agreement with China and little duty applicable from other countries.
According to statistics released by the telecommunication authority, the number of mobile phone users in the South Asian country reached 151 million by July 2018.
