Bangladesh court issues arrest warrant for Khaleda Zia

DHAKA (Web Desk) – A court in Bangladesh capital, Dhaka, issued arrest warrant for former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia after she failed to appear before the court in two corruption cases, media reports said.
Judge Abu Ahmed Jamadder issued the warrant after he turned down Zia’s bail plea. Her counsel has sought more time for her to appear before the court citing her bad health and security concerns as the reason.
The court order will be now forwarded to local police station where the corruption cases had been registered.
It is still unclear whether the government will arrest her or not after the court’s decision.
“The next measures will be taken by the authorities in line with law,” said the state counsel, Mosharraf Hossain Kajol.
Zia had been charged with using funds illegally to buy land for a charity named after her late husband, former president Ziaur Rahman.
Zia’s lawyers have categorically refuted the charges.
