Rangers get 90-day remand of Lyari gangster Uzair Baloch

KARACHI (Staff Report) – An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday handed over Lyari gang-war leader Uzair Jan Baloch to Sindh Rangers for 90 days over alleged crimes of target killings, extortion, kidnapping and terrorism.

Visibly weak Baloch, who was arrested on outskirts of the port city earlier in the day, was produced before ATC judge Syed Farooq Shah amid heightened security.

Rangers pleaded 90-day physical remand of the accused, a request granted by the court which also allowed the formation of a joint instigation team (JIT) to interrogate the gangster.

With head-money of Rs2 million, the main character of Lyari gang war is facing over 55 cases of murders, kidnappings, extortion and terrorism.

Following his arrest, police and Rangers have been put on high alert, with enhanced patrolling in Lyari in the wake of any possible reaction.

After fleeing from Pakistan, Baloch was arrested on December 28, 2014 by Interpol at Dubai airport where he arrived from Muscat carrying a counterfeit Iranian passport.

Following court proceedings in Dubai, the accused was handed over to Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in February 2015.
