ISLAMABAD (Online) – Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan has given a green signal to take action against former federal minister Rehman Malik into alleged corruption in Safe City Project.
Sources said the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) would inform the interior ministry about the alleged embezzlement of billions by former federal minister who belongs to Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).
Rehman Malik, after taking charge of interior minister, set cost of the project over Rs11 billion and handed over the contract to a Chinese firm against rules and regulations.
When contacted, Rehman Malik refused to give any comment regarding the allegations.
Talking to Online, law expert Babar Sattar said that Supreme Court had termed the project null and directed National Accountability Bureau (NAB) to take action.
As per SC’s directives, the government and Ministry of Interior was supposed to be take action but the work on the project was resumed.
“A petition of contempt of court has been filed in the apex court”, Mr Sattar added.
The project was initiated by the PPP-led government and spearheaded by the interior ministry headed by Rehman Malik. The project would equip law enforcement agencies with a computer aided dispatch system and other software such as facial recognition and vehicle management system.
The Safe City project was approved on December 29, 2009.
The project was challenged in the Supreme Court and a three-member bench on August 23, 2012. After the PML-N came to power, the project was renegotiated, according to the rules, with the concerned Chinese company.
Later, reportedly, the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) also gave clearance to the project.
