Seven policemen on polio duty shot dead in Karachi

KARACHI (Web Desk) – At least seven policemen have died after unidentified shooters attacked a police mobile van at Bangla Bazaar, Orangi Town on Wednesday.

The policemen, who were providing security to polio teams, were brought from interior Sindh.

The attackers, who left seven policemen dead on the spot, managed to flee from the scene. No further details and identity of the victims was immediately available.

Police and rescue teams shifted bodies of the victims to Abbasi Shaheed hospital for identification and medico-legal formalities.

“Eight terrorists riding four motorcycles opened fire on two police teams. One of our injured policemen retaliated,” DIG West Feroz Shah told media. “Four policemen were killed in one attack and three died in a second ambush,” he said.

An emergency has been declared in Abbasi Shaheed Hospital after the incident.

AD Khawaja, Inspector General of Sindh police, announced Rs 5 million bounty for providing information relating to killers of policemen deployed on the security of health workers engaged in a four-day anti-polio campaign.

During his visit to the crime scene, the IG Sindh got a briefing on initial investigation into the incident.

Talking to media, Khawaja said that the militants could not down the morale of the law enforcers. He said that it is not possible to provide two police mobiles each to 5000 anti-polio teams.

The IG Sindh announced a compensation of Rs 2 million for each family of the victim. Two family members of each family would also be given jobs in the police department, he added.

Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif strongly condemned the terrorist attack on the Police personnel in Karachi.

He said the sacrifices of police in the entire country and particularly in reviving peace in Karachi were unparalleled.

“They have sacrificed their lives for securing the future of our generations,” the Prime Minister said in a statement released from the PM House.

The Prime Minister offered his condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed souls.

Last December, two military police personnel were shot dead by two masked gunmen riding on a motorcycle in Karachi.

The attack was placed near Tibet Plaza on MA Jinnah Road.

Last months, four terrorists of banned Al-Qaeda Sub-Continent and Lashkar-e-Jhangvi were killed in a police encounter in Sachal Goth area.

SSP Malir Rao anwar said the terrorists were killed during a search operation conducted on a secret tip over presence of terrorists in the area.

Two of the dead terrorists were identified as Noman Akhtar and Suhail alias Khamba.
