PARIS – France’s most famous contemporary poet, Yves Bonnefoy, has died at the age of 93, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The author of more than 100 books translated into 30 languages was highly decorated in his native France, and he had long been a frontrunner to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. He died on Friday, according to the College de France, where he was an honorary professor.
He was also known for his translations of Shakespeare’s plays, as well as the works of Yeats, Petrarch and his friend Georges Seferis.
