ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – The Pakistan Meteorological Department on Monday issued a warning about the chances of riverine flood in Pakistan as India is mulling to release rainwater from its main rivers in next few days.
The impetus for the flood is the significant increase, 25 % to be precise above average rain since the onset of the monsoon season.
Detailing about the likely flood, PMD Director-General Dr Ghulam Rasul told that normal to heavy showers are expected in the catchment areas near India from August 31 to September 1.
“Currently, all water reservoirs in India have reached the maximum conservation level and it is expected that the showers that are expected on Wednesday and Thursday would prompt India to release extra water in the rivers which would likely generate riverine flood in Pakistan,” he told Express tribune.
The official expressed that till date all the rivers are flowing normally, and at a few places there are low-level floods. He clarified that at present the situation is under control.
It is worth mentioning that India is bound to inform Pakistan before release of water but precautionary measures in this regard are needed to be taken by the department.
