UNITED NATIONS – The Indian claims of carrying out “surgical strikes” in Pakistani side of Line of Control have backfired to such an extent that the top world body – United Nations – went public to dismiss any cross-border raid.
The other day, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said at a daily press briefing that the UN Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) had not “directly observed” any firing along the Line of Control (LoC).
“We are obviously aware of the reports of these presumed violations and are talking to the relevant concerned authorities,” he said.

Even as any cross-border strike is considered a violation of the military control line between the Indian and Pakistani controlled parts of the former princely state of Kashmir and Jammu, the Modi-led government is persistent to paint its unprovoked fire as “surgical strikes” on “terrorist camps” inside Azad Kashmir.
In a sharp response to UN remarks, India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin said the facts on the ground do not change whether somebody has “observed” it or not.
“I have nothing to say because what (Dujarric) said was ‘directly observed’. It’s a call that they have to take. I cannot place myself in their boots and directly observe something,” said the Indian envoy, when asked to comment on Dujarric’s remarks.

The Times of India quoted Akbaruddin saying the “facts on the ground do not change whether somebody acknowledges or not. Facts are facts, we presented the facts and that’s where we stand.”
India on Thursday claimed to have carried out “surgical strikes on seven terror launch pads along the LoC, with the Army inflicting ‘significant casualties’ on terrorists preparing to infiltrate from PoK.”
The Pakistani army, the following day, also flew international and local media to the Line of Control (LoC) to prove India didn’t conduct any “surgical strikes” across the international border.

“The army took the rare step of flying international media to the de facto border to make its case in a battle of competing narratives,” French news agency Agence France Presse (AFP) wrote.
During the visit, Pak Army spokesman Lt Gen Asim Bajwa proved to the world that no signature of any “surgical strike” could be found and that India’s claims were white lies.

Despite India’s warmongering, the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon is following the situation along the Line of Control between India and Pakistan with “great concern and the increased tensions along the LoC as well as the “escalating rhetoric” between the two countries.
“The Secretary General urges the government of India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint and address the outstanding issues peacefully and through dialogue. He would welcome all proposals in that regard as well as any de-escalation initiatives,” Mr Dujarric had said in the press briefing.
He stressed the UN Chief would welcome any proposals to de-escalate the tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
