NA-246 by-poll: MQM leading in initial results

KARACHI (Staff Report) – Muttahia Qaumi Movement (MQM) candidate Kanwar Naveed Jameel is reportedly leading in NA-246 by-election as unofficial results start turning up after the polling time ended.

Jameel is followed by Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan candidate Rashid Nasim and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) contestant Imran Ismail according to unofficial results.

The process to count total votes cast is still underway and the final results will be prepared in coming hours.

The balloting process continued throughout the day without any break from 8 am to 5pm earlier today.

The seat went vacant after Nabil Gabol, who was elected on MQM’s ticket, resigned as MNA citing his differences with the party.

Sindh Rangers arrested two presiding officers and a fake voter from two polling stations.

According to sources, Presiding Officer Syed Majid Ali at Delhi College in Karimabad was caught red-handed for letting a fake voter, Rehan, cast votes in favour of Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI).

Separately, Assistant Presiding Officer Shah Sultana was held from a Ghareebabad polling station for allegedly handing voting stamp to an unknown person. She is in Rangers’ custody.

Rangers, enjoying power of a special magistrate, took them into custody and announced the punishments of imprisonment and fine to the culprits on the occasion.

Officials said it was still to be ascertained about political affiliation of the arrested people.
