DHAKA – At least 92 people were killed in south-east Bangladesh due to rain-triggered landslides, with most of them buried under it, authorities said on Tuesday.
According to police officials, the death toll was likely to rise as rescue workers were reaching far off places.
Most of the deaths occurred in two districts, Rangamati and Bandarban, which the meteorological office said had been pounded by heavy rains since early Monday.
The head of the Department of Disaster Management Reaz said that the recovery work was still ongoing, and Bazlur Rashid, a weather official told that Rangamati district had been pounded by 343 millimetres (13.5 inches) of rain on Monday.
“It is still going on today,” he said.
Heavy monsoon rains also pounded the capital Dhaka and Chittagong subsequently leading to snarl-ups.
On the other hand, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director Lt Col Rashedul Hasan told the Dhaka Tribune that an army team was clearing mud from a landslide on a road in Manikchhari in the morning when another landslide occurred.
“Several officers and members of the army are missing in the incident,” he added.
