ISLAMABAD – Ministry of Information and Technology has decided to conduct an inquiry into a matter of selling of cell phones without IMEI numbers by one of the top smartphone brands of the country, QMobile.
Local media reported that the matter will be investigated from the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA). The value of cell phones sold out in local markets is in millions, it reported.
The ministry has directed Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to explain how QMobile sold these cell phones in markets without its permission.
IT ministry Director PR, Saghir Anwar Wattoo maintained that no company was allowed to sell phones without IMEI number, adding that this matter is directly linked to the PTA.
IT Minister Anusha Rehman also taking the notice of the issue has sought explanation from PTA’s official concerned, Muhammad Talib Dogar, in this regard.
Authorities of the ministry are of the view that the matter will be investigated by the FIA if PTA fails to submit reasonable response, adding that those who are found involved in this case will have to face legal action.
International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number can be used to trace or block any smartphone. It’s a unique number attached to every device and its absence can multiply security threats.
Earlier in May, media began to air news that QMobile is allegedly involved in selling a variety of smartphones without IMEI number.
