Arba’een: Muslims mark Imam Hussain’s Chehlum amid tight security

LAHORE/KARBALA – Security has been beefed up across Pakistan ahead of Arba’een which marks the 40th day after the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS) – the grandson of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The government is also expected to suspend cellular-services for security reasons.

Mourning processions will be taken out in every big city of Pakistan including Lahore, Karachi, Quetta, and Peshawar.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered to ensure fool-proof security arrangements at the eve of Chehlum of Hazrat Imam Hussain and martyrs of Karbala as well as the annual Urs of Hazrat Data Gunj Bakhsh.

Assuming the protection of property and life of people as the prime inclination, the CM directed the authorities concerned to opt all necessary measures for maintaining peace.

Shehbaz, while giving instructions to the Provincial Cabinet Committee for Peace and order, said that there couldn’t be any obligation more critical than assurance of the protection of the lives and property of the people, so law enforcement agencies ought to remain caution and utilise all their energies and capabilities to ensure peace.

He said that there shouldn’t be left any gap for maintaining peaceful atmosphere and a watchful eye to be kept on nefarious elements.

“We cannot afford any negligence in current situation so additional security force to be deployed at Mosques, Imam-Bargahs and other important places also law enforcing agencies are advised to maintain close proximity and coordination among themselves.”

Besides jamming cellular services, the Sindh government has banned pillion riding across the province from November 9-10 on the occasion of the Chehlum.

A notification was issued Tuesday, warning that strict action will be taken against violators.

Every year, Muslim pilgrims march on the Iraqi holy city of Karbala to commemorate Arba’een, an annual Shia pilgrimage, known as the world’s largest public gathering.
