GUJRANWALA (Staff Report) – Polling process on Sunday in by-election in PP-100 is underway amid tight security in Gujranwala. The voting started at 8am and will continue till 5pm.
However, heavy rains hampered the voting process at various polling stations.
Close competition is expected today between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in the by-elections.
The seat became vacant after PML-N’s Rana Shamshad Ahmad was assassinated on May 31. His elder brother Rana Akhtar is N-League’s candidate in today’s by-elections.
Meantime, PTI has fielded Ehsanullah Virk in a constituency of 162,000 registered voters.
As many as 113 polling stations have been made for the by-polls. Of them, 22 have been declared sensitive.
Pakistan Army will remain on guard for law and order during the voting process.
Gujranwala’s constituency PP-100 is believed to be a strong PML-N bastion which was won by Rana Shamshad of the ruling party with a big margin in 2013 general polls.
