SC rejects govt s plea to appoint new Islamabad IGP

ISLAMABAD – The supreme court rejected on Monday a petition filed by the federal government seeking appointment of new inspector general of police in Islamabad.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar heard the plea moved by Attorney General Anwar Mansoor earlier today.

The attorney general argued that there is a need to appoint a new IGP due to prevailing law and order situation, which deteriorated after TLP launched protests across the country following the acquittal of Asia Bibi in a blasphemy case.

To which, the chief justice remarked that the government should give additional charge of IGP to some other senior officer.

During the hearing, the chief justice also commented over the landmark verdict in the Asia Bibi’s case, stating: “We are not Qazi’s for Muslims only”. He added that the court also issued the verdict in Urdu language so ordinary person can read it easily.

Amid the TLP protests, the CJP remarked that state should perform its duty to maintain law and order in the country as it was stated by Prime Minister Imran Khan in his address last night.

“How we can give a sentence to someone if there is no case against him/her,” he remarked.

Earlier, the apex court had taken suo motu notice after the federal government transferred Inspector General of Police (IGP), Islamabad, Jan Muhammad for allegedly refusing to take action on the complaint of Federal Minister Azam Swati’s son and failing to pick calls from the minister.

On Oct 29, the court suspended the notification of his transfer. “We cannot tolerate political meddling in the police. Governance of law should be maintained and we will not let our institutions falter,” Justice Nisar said, adding that there was also a transfer in Punjab and this transfer happened within a matter of days.
