ISLAMABAD – Annoyed over an increase in spread of misinformation on social media, Information Minister Chaudhry Fawad Hussain on Monday emphasised on the need to take strict action against fake news.
The information responding to a tweet, posted by Maleeka Ali Bokhari, a PTI lawmaker, rejecting a fake notification about her appointment by the PTI government as the head of the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), said that a series of fake notifications and news is systematically spread on social media”.

He further said: “…it started from a media dinner picture and now there is a series of such rubbish”. The information also called for taking strict action to curb what has become a global phenomenon without effecting freedom on social media.
He wrote, “Without effecting freedom on SM we need to take strict action against fake news”.

On Sunday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s lawmaker and Parliamentary Secretary for Law and Justice Maleeka Ali Bokhari rejected her appointment as Chairperson of BISP.
Maleeka wrote on Twitter that she categorically puts it on record that neither she had been appointed as head of BISP nor she was related to Zulfi Bokhari.

Earlier, it emerged on media that President Dr Arif Alvi has appointed Maleeka Ali Bokhari as chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) on the advice of the Prime Minister.
“Maleeka Ali Bokhari is appointed as chairperson Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), in terms of section 5 (3) of Benazir Income Support Programme Act, 2010, with immediate effect and until further orders,” a notification circulating in media said.
The BISP is a flagship programme for eradication of poverty and elevating the status of marginalized and under-privileged sections of society, especially women, through the establishment of comprehensive social protection net.
