SC reverts tribunal s verdict in NA-89 Jhang, PML-N s Sheikh Akram reinstated as MNA

ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – The Supreme Court of Pakistan Wednesday reverted a verdict of Election Tribunal in NA-89 Jhang and reinstated the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz’s (PML-N) Sheikh Muhammad Akram as Member National Assembly (MNA).

The Election Tribunal had declared the election of Sheikh Muhammad Akram as null and void in a April 9, 2014 verdict. The tribunal ruled that PML-N candidate had entered a wrong CNIC in his nomination papers.

It further announced Moulana Ahmad Ludhyanvi of Muttahida Deni Mahaz party as winner in NA-89 instead of Sheikh Muhammad Akram.

However Sheikh Akram moved apex court against the tribunal’s decision, where a three-member bench led by Justice Saqib Nisar reserved the order on December 8, 2015.

On Wednesday, announcing the reserved verdict, the Supreme Court reverted the tribunal’s decision and accepted the plea filed by Sheikh Muhammad Akram.

It is also pertinent to be mentioned here that Sheikh Muhammad Akram is father of former Federal Minister Sheikh Waqas Akram, who was disqualified to contest 2013 general elections.

In 2013 general election, Sheikh Muhammad Akram bagged 74,324 votes while his opponent Moulana Ahmad Ludhyanvi got 71,598 votes.
