11 soldiers dead as suicide bomber strikes Swat army camp

PESHAWAR – Eleven personnel of Pakistan Army, including an officer, embraced martyrdom whereas 13 others received injuries in a suicide attack in Swat city of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said on Saturday.

The attack was carried out at a sports unit of an army camp, the military’s media wing said in a statement.

The attack was claimed by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in an email to journalists, a French news agency reported.

Initial reports suggested that the bomber blew himself up in a ground where soldiers were playing volleyball in Sharifabad area of Swat’s Kabal district.

According to some sources, as many as 16 people were injured in the blast. All the injured were shifted to Combined Military Hospital Saidu Sharif.

Security forces and police have cordoned off the area.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi strongly condemned the suicide attack and prayed for the departed souls and quick recovery of the injured.

Expressing deep grief and condolences with the bereaved families in a statement, the prime minister stated that the coward terrorist enemy is no match for our valiant sons of the soil. “No cowardly attack can deter us in pursuing our struggle against the menace of terrorism to its logical conclusion. We will continue our fight till the last trace is rooted out,” the statement read.
