Champions Trophy 2017: Tahir, Amla shine as South Africa beat Sri Lanka

LONDON – South Africa beat Sri Lanka by 96 runs in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 Group-B match opener at Oval, today (Saturday).

Sent into bat, South Africa set a difficult target of 300 runs for Sri Lanka in 50 overs. Amla scored 103 off 115 balls with five fours and two sixes while his partner du Plessis made 75 from 70 balls with six boundaries. Leg-spinner Imran Tahir took four wickets for 27 in 8.3 overs.

In reply, Sri Lanka were all out for 203 runs with still 8.3 overs remaining. Opener Niroshan Dickwella had given them a blistering start smashing 41 off 33 balls.

The mega event will witness it’s first Group B encounter. The Proteas have a 2-1 head-to-head record against Sri Lanka in the ICC Champions Trophy.

The second match of ICC Champions Trophy between Australia and New Zealand ended in a draw due to rain at Birmingham on Friday night.

Both the teams were given one point each. On Sunday, Pakistan will take on arch rivals India India at Birmingham.
