Design

Nokia 1 gives a familiar feel to the users with the company’s famous build quality. The smartphone weighs 131g with dimensions of 133.6 x 67.8 x 9.5 mm.

On the front side, there is a 4.5-inch FWVGA display. The top bezel features a front-facing camera, and earpiece includes Nokia branding and a microphone.

On the rear side, a 5-megapixel camera setup with an LED flash, a speaker grill and removable Nokia’s famous Xpress-on covers give the users a unique utility.

Under the back cover, users will find a replaceable battery, two nano-SIM slots, and a microSD card slot.

At the bottom, there’s a Micro USB 2.0 port and on top, there is a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Display

The Nokia 1 is equipped with 4.5-inch FWVGA (Full Wide Video Graphics Array) LCD display, which gives 854×480 pixels resolution and 16:9 ratio with rounded bezels. The display delivers crisp visuals and excellent contrast for day to day usage, with a pixel density of 218 PPI (Pixels per inch) densities.

As this is the low-range budget device so the smartphones don’t feature HD screen.

The phone’s display is reasonably bright, but it looks slightly washed out and the legibility in direct sunlight isn’t brilliant.

Overall, the display gives a good feeling at the first glance due to its rounded corners.

Hardware

The smartphone is powered by MediaTek MT6737M chipset, Octa-core 1.1 GHz Cortex-A53, Mali-T720MP1 GPU and, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage and 2150 mAh removable battery.

Camera

Nokia has always followed the latest market trend while going for innovation, even in its low-range smartphones.

For Imaging, there is a 5-megapixel camera on the rear, and 2MP on the front.

The included camera app is simple but fully functional. You can take pictures and record video capped at 720p HD. The app, however, doesn’t include many special modes, but it offers a panorama option and some rudimentary manual controls.

Operating System

Nokia 1 runs on Google’s latest Android 8.1 Oreo (Go edition) that is a special version of Android tuned and tweaked to run well on low-end devices.

It is a vanilla Android experience with access to Google’s apps and services like the Play Store, Gmail, YouTube and Google Assistant as well.

The bundled version of the Google Play Store has also been tweaked to highlight Go versions of apps, while still offering its entire catalogue. The pre-installed version of Gmail is Gmail Go, but you can still find and download the standard version of Gmail if you choose so. Likewise, Google Play will mention if a Go version is available when looking for apps.

Our verdict is that Nokia 1 is at once simple and elegant, light and very much affordable smartphone – available in just Rs8,999. Isn’t simpler the better?
