ISLAMABAD (Staff Report) – The Supreme Court of Pakistan Wednesday ordered Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold re-election in PS-76 Dadu-III constituency of SIndh Assembly.
A three member bench headed by Justice Saqib Nisar announced the verdict.
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) candidate Parveen Aziz Junejo was declared winner in 2013 general elections however PML-N’s Liaqat Ali Jatoi, who also served as Sindh Chief Minister, challenged the result with an election tribunal when the first left her party.
Announcing verdict on the plea of Jatoi, the tribunal declared him winner in PS-76 declaring the election of Parveen Jonejo as null and void. PML-N candidate had bagged 22,803 votes in 2013 election while PPP’s Ms Jonejo got 56,938 votes.
However another independent candidate Asghar Ali Sheikh moved Supreme Court of Pakistan against the tribunal’s decision and prayed to the court to order a re-election declaring the whole polling process as null and void.
It is also pertinent to be mentioned here that Asghar Ali Sheikh could manage to get only 95 votes in 2013 elections.
