Sisters shot at by uncle for refusing marriage proposal

BAHAWALPUR (Staff Report) – A girl was killed and her sister injured by their uncle and cousins after they refused a marriage proposal in Chak 42 area in Bahawalpur on Saturday.

According to details, Arshad had asked Shumaila, 18, and her sister Sania, to marry his sons. But when the sisters refused, he opened fire on them, killing Shumaila on the spot and fatally injuring Sania, police told Online news agency.

The injured were rushed to Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital for treatment, while the body of Shumaila was handed over to the family after completion of medico-legal formalities.

Doctors said that the injured girl was in critical condition. The attackers fled the scene before police could arrest them.

Police have registered a case and started investigations.

The incident comes days after a young woman was strangled and set ablaze on the orders of a local jirga in Pakistan’s Abbotabad district in ‘punishment’ for helping her friend marry her lover.

The brutal killing sparked strong reaction countrywide, compelling the Prime Minister to order strict action against the culprits. Earlier, Abbotabad police took 14 people, including the girl’s mother, into custody and presented them before the local court.
