How to avoid being hacked at ATMs, Hamid Mir reveals trick

ISLAMABAD – As Pakistan’s banking system is in a vulnerable position following the recent cyber-attack in which data of “almost all banks” has been hacked, the customers are wary of using these transaction channels, including ATMs.

The Federal Investigation Agency’s cyber wing on Tuesday revealed that data of several Pakistani banks were hacked.

The FIA commented after Group-IB, a global cybersecurity firm specialising in the financial sector, claimed that hackers had put a new dump of Pakistani credit and debit cards in dark web markets for sale.

Amid calls for tightening the cybersecurity to save the Pakistani nationals’ hard earn money, a renowned journalist has revealed a technique to prevent credit and debit cards from being hacked at ATMs.

Hamid Mir during his current affairs programme said that the ATM cards can be secured by adopting a simple and easy method while using ATM machines.

The journalist advised people to strike the cancel button on ATM’s keypad twice before making any transaction through credit/debit card. This simple activity will make the hacking system if there is any, ineffective, he claimed.

 

In an ongoing wave of cyber-attack on Pakistani banks, an account of Additional Inspector General of Punjab Tariq Masood Yaseen was targeted.

Around Rs2 million has been stolen from Yaseen’s bank account fraudulently, while the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has launched an investigation into the matter.

This cyber-attack comes a day after a retired scientist Drs Yousaf Khilji was deprived of Rs3 million after its bank account was hacked.

However, Khilji was returned Rs2.7 million by the bank concerned after the FIA took notice of the issue.
