10-year-old Simba found dead in Karachi zoo

KARACHI – An Asiatic lion, popularly known as Simba, was found dead in his enclosure in Karachi Zoological Garden on Tuesday.

The zoo authorities confirmed to the media that the two lions, including Simba, were brought to the zoo on October 19, last year after being rescued from an illegal circus in Karachi’s Gulshan-e-Iqbal locality.

The lion was unwell since Sunday and was undergoing treatment, according to zoo officials.

However, the cause of the death has yet to be ascertained.

On the other hand, the authorities confirmed, the other lion brought into the zoo with Simba, Rajoo, is in good health condition healthy

Simba was an Asiatic lion, which has been listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List because of its small population size.

On April 30, 2016, a Bengali tiger had died at the Karachi zoo due to kidney failure.

In August last year, an African lion cub named Angela died in Lahore after months of severe dehydration, sparking outrage from visitors and animal rights groups.

According to Lahore Zoo Veterinary Doctor, the lioness was kept under observation and intensive care and good feed was also good but failed to recover enough strength.

Also, in the same month, a 3-year-old female leopard who was imported from South Africa died in Lahore zoo.

In May this year, Suzi, Lahore Zoo’s only elephant, died after spending a few days with acute pain in her legs. She was only 31-years-old.
