MENLO PARK (Web Desk) – Facebook has finally put ladies first. The social network just revealed itself as a card-carrying feminist, as many eagle-eyed Facebook users may have already noticed the change to the little ‘friend request’ symbol.

It might be a minuscule change, but the story behind it gives users the warm and fuzzies.
Caitlin Winner, Facebook’s design manager, reveals that on the previous icon or ‘glyph’ the woman ‘had a little chip in her shoulder’, while the man was symmetrical.
She said: “As a woman, educated at a women’s college, it was hard not to read into the symbolism of the current icon; the woman was quite literally in the shadow of the man.”

She also described the female icon’s hair as a ‘Darth Vader-like helmet’, so Ms Winner decided to give the lady a makeover – now she has a pretty fancy new ‘slightly more shapely bob’.
