ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Pakistan People’s Party’s Mian Raza Rabbani was elected unopposed to the top slot in Senate on Thursday.
Reports said he was a consensus candidate for the top office.
For the office of Deputy chairman, sources said, the political parties have agreed on JUI-F’s Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri who was elected Senator from Balochistan.
Newly elected Senators took oath as members of the Upper House before electing a new Senate chairman and deputy chairman in the Senate session at Parliament House.
The elections for the post of Senate chairman and deputy chairman will be held at 3pm today.
The ruling PML-N and opposition parties had earlier agreed to support Senator Raza Rabbani, the PPP’s candidate for the office of Senate chairman. As per reports, opposition parties will select a candidate from the JUI-F for the post of deputy chairman.
The Senate session began with Senator Ishaq Dar in the chair. He was nominated by the president as the Presiding Officer to administer oath to newly elected lawmakers.
