ISLAMABAD – An accountability court in Islamabad conditioned the provision of an air conditioner for former president Asif Ali Zardari with the approval of a medical officer.
Judge Mohammad Bashir directed the Pakistan Peoples Party Co-Chairman on Friday to approach a medical officer and ordered the authorities to allow an AC in the jail cell if the medical officer recommends it.
The judge, who was hearing a contempt of court petition against the denial of air conditioner to the incarcerated former president, remarked that the law was not a decoration piece for display and questioned why the authorities were not providing an AC to the former president if the law permits them to do so.
During the hearing of the case, the counsel for Zardari contended that his client was a heart patient and seven stents had already been placed in his body.
The judge, however, conditioned the provision of an air conditioner with the approval of a medical officer.
The former president is facing multiple inquiries besides the mega-money laundering scam, the investigations of which were transferred to Rawalpindi from Karachi against the will of PPP leaders.

Zardari was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on June 10 after his pre-arrest bail was canceled by the Islamabad High Court.
Earlier in August, the same judge had granted approval for various amenities to be installed or brought for use in his cell but from his personal expenditure.
In a ruling issued on Aug 20, the former president was permitted to keep a fridge, an air conditioner, internet connection and a personal attendant in the cell at his own expense.
Prime Minister Imran Khan had earlier announced to remove the facilities of television and air conditioner from the prison cells of Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari.
