Saudi billionaire Alwaleed bin Talal shifted to jail amid settlement talks, claims Arab media

RIYADH – Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, Saudi Arabia’s richest man has been shifted to the nation’s highest security prison Al-Ha’ir – located south of Riyadh, months after he was confined to the prestigious Ritz Carlton hotel.

According to a report by Al-Jadeed news, some 60 detainees were transferred, most notably Prince Alwaleed bin Talal as well as Prince Turki bin Abdullah, the former emir of Riyadh besides a number of government officials.

The report quoting highly placed sources also claimed that the prince dubbed “Arabian Warren Buffet” offered a certain amount to secure his release but it is not in line with the required number.

Sources also revealed that ‘majority of detainees rejected a compromise submitted by the state to acquire a high proportion of their funds and property in exchange for their release, which is strongly opposed by Walid bin Talal’.

Another sensational disclosure that hit headlines over the weekend was that the prince offered to ‘donate’ to the Saudi government, majorly steered by Muhammad bin Salman, avoiding any admission of wrongdoing.

Talal, who is worth more than $17bn according to Forbes, and owns stakes in Twitter, Lyft and Citigroup also reportedly refused to pay the £728million the 32-year-old bin Salman demanded from him, as well as declining to hand over control of some of his investment companies.

Earlier this week the Saudi government seized the Binladen construction group and arrested some of the Bin Laden family – relatives of Osama Bin Laden.

No official statement from the Saudi regime has been published regarding the prince, however, according to a report by Daily Mail, the 62-year-old Saudi royal was hung upside down during the investigations stemming from bin Salman, mostly referred as MBS’ anti-corruption purge.
