ISLAMABAD – Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar on Tuesday said that no any legislation was drafted by parliaments so far in a matter pertaining to child harassment.
The chief justice gave the remarks while hearing a suo moto case regarding a seven-year-old girl, Zainab, who was raped and murdered in Kashur last week. Saqib said that he was ready to meet the parliamentarians to bring reforms in the judicial system.
He emphasised on bridging a gap between judiciary and parliament, adding that the parliament should take steps for reformation as it was a supreme institution.
Punjab additional inspector general (AIG) and advocate general (AG) attended the court proceedings in the Kasur rape case.
Zainab was kidnapped on January 4 when she was on her way to Holy Quran class. Her body was discovered five days later from a garbage pile. The post-mortem report revealed that the minor girl had been raped and murdered.
Expressing dissatisfaction over the performance of police and government, the chief justice said that no any major breakthrough happened so far in the case. He added that whole nation was in deep grief over the brutal incident.
The AIG informed the court that probe in the case was underway, while AG said that police have interrogated around 1,100 suspects in the case.
The chief justice remarked that if the case was not resolved, it will expose the failure of police and the government.
The AIG informed the court that eight similar cases emerged in Kasur since the last one and half year.
The court has also ordered to stop proceedings regarding the Zainab case at the Lahore High Court as the high court had no authority to take suo moto action.
Chief Justice Nisar has summoned the joint investigation team, formed to probe the Kasur incident, at the next hearing on Sunday, which will be heard in the Lahore Registry.
The chief justice also said, “We will hold a conference regarding flaws in the investigation,” adding that Justice Asif Saeed Khosa will address the conference.
