Nawaz Sharif appears before NAB court in Flagship Investment reference

ISLAMABAD – Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif appeared before the accountability court in Islamabad in the Flagship investment reference on Tuesday.

Sharif arrived at the judicial complex amid tight surveillance where the head of six-member Joint Investigation Team (JIT) Wajid Zia presented crucial documents.

Zia, who was tasked to probe the offshore dealings of the former ruling family, presented the financial statement of the Flagship Investment Limited spanning from 2002 to 2016.

The Additional Director General of FIA also presented the letter forwarded by the Qatari prince, Hammad bin Jasim to the JIT on July 6, 2017 and an e-mail received by the foreign office of Pakistan.

The transmission and delivery report of the communication between JIT and Qatari prince was also presented before the judge Arshad Malick.

As many as three references were filed against the members of the former ruling family in line with the directives issued by the apex court in the Panama Papers case.

Nawaz Sharif and his sons Hussain and Hasan are accused in all three references – Hill Metal establishment, London flats and offshore firms – whereas his daughter Maryam and son-in-law MNA Capt (retd) Safdar are convicted in the Avenfield reference only.

Hussain and Hassan Nawaz are UK-based and have been absconding since the proceedings began last year, however, the former premier has been showing up regularly before the court.
