MUMBAI – Bollywood actors Govinda and Shilpa Shetty have been asked to testify in a court in Pakur, Jharkhand tomorrow (Tuesday) over a controversial case relating a song from their 1996 film blockbuster ‘Chote Sarkar’.
A local lawyer in Jharkhand filed the case against the actors back in 2000, when it was still a part of Bihar, for the lyrics of the song ‘Ek Chumma Tu Mujhko Udhaar De De’ from the movie.
The actors have been accused of defaming Bihar and Uttar Pradesh since the lyrics of the song read: ‘Ek chumma tu mujhko udhar de de, badle mein UP Bihar lele.’
A non-bailable warrant was also issued against director Vimal Kumar, singers Udit Narayan and Alka Yagnik, music composer duo Anand Milind and lyricist Rani Malik on 5 May 2001.
According to reports, the hearing of the case was scheduled for June 30 this year. However, despite several warnings, none of the actors showed up.
Reportedly, an arrest warrant had been issued against them on July 20, but no action was taken, according to the Times of India.
Now the actors have been asked to testify in the court tomorrow.
