J K CM Mehbooba Mufti resigns as BJP pulls out of ruling alliance in IoK

SRINAGAR – The chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti tendered her resignation on Tuesday, hours after Bharatiya Janata Party parted ways with PDP, exiting the ruling alliance.

“It has become untenable for the BJP to continue its alliance government in Jammu and Kashmir, hence we are withdrawing” BJP general secretary Ram Madhav said at a press conference this afternoon.

“Terrorism, violence and radicalisation have risen and fundamental rights of the citizens are under danger in the Valley. Shujaat Bukhari’s killing is an example,” the BJP leader added.

The politician continued that all the BJP ministers in the J&K government would resign adding that the party wanted governor’s rule to be imposed in the state.

“Keeping in mind larger interest of India’s security and integrity, the fact is that J&K is an integral part of India. In order to bring control over the situation prevailing in the state, we have decided that the reigns of power in the state be handed over to the governor,” he stated.

The ultra-nationalist BJP entered into an alliance with PDP after an inconclusive election in 2014 to steer the restive region, home to violence and unrest for decades.

The pullout has riled multiple Indian politicians who took to Twitter to express their anger.
