ISLAMABAD – The management of Pakistan’s prestigious Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU) has failed miserably in stopping the use of drugs and liquor within the campus premises, it has been learnt.
In a briefing to the National Assembly Standing Committee on Federal Education and Professional Training, QAU Dean Prof Waseem Ahmed said that from contraband sale and consumption, gambling was also rampant in the varsity.
The dean admitted that suspects go scot free after being caught red-handed.
‘Wild parties are held in the dorms where people freely consume drugs and liquor. Police, on the complaint of the university’s administration, have raided such parties and even made arrests, but all those people go scot free by the next morning,’ the dean said.
The meeting of the standing committee was held at QAU, under the chairmanship of Dr Amirullah Marwat.
What adds insult to the injury of Pakistan’s premier institute is another admittance of Prof Ahmed that employees of the university were also involved in the supply of hashish and liquor.
‘Despite presence of over 200 security guards, the administration cannot control the sale and consumption of contrabands’ he said hinting at the powerful people behind this illegal trade.
He further said that some unauthorized people were also living in the hostels.
Prof Ahmed’s shocking disclosure was confirmed by QAU Vice Chancellor Dr Javed Ashraf, who while talking to Daily Express reaffirmed that drugs, liquor and gambling was common at the public sector varsity.
‘200 guards were not enough to man such a huge campus’ he added.
Surprisingly, Quaid e Azam university is the only Pakistani institute that found a place in the top 100 Asian universities last year.
According to Global Education rankings for 2017, Quaid-e-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad, is ranked at 95 in the list of top Asian universities. QAU is the only Pakistani university that has been included in top 100 educational institutions.
Globally, the university ranks 539 with a score of 49.1, having slipped from 496th place last year. Agha Khan University sits at the 826th spot with a score of 39.6.
