KARACHI – An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) has sent former senior superintendent of police Rao Anwar to prison on Saturday, on a judicial remand till May 2.
The former SSP and 11 of his detained subordinates and 14 absconders had been accused of abducting Naqeebullah Mehsud for ransom and then allegedly killing him in a staged encounter in Malir on January 13.
During today’s hearing, the investigating officer of the case requested the court to send Anwar to jail on judicial remand and sought a week’s time to submit the final challan of the case.

He informed the court that a new joint investigation team (JIT) has been formed to investigate Anwar over the killing and the challan will be submitted on the recommendation of JIT.
As many as 11 police officials had already been arrested in the case. Anwar surrendered before the Supreme Court in Islamabad on March 21, this year.
The top court had taken notice of the killing of Mehsud after the incident sparked outrage on social media and protests by political and religious parties and rights organisations.

The former Malir SSP and his team went into hiding after being blamed for the killing of Naqeebullah and three others in an ‘encounter’ in Shah Latif Town area.
Initially, he claimed the four men were affiliated with the banned Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and Islamic State (IS).
An FIR was registered against Anwar and his team at Sacchal police station after a three-member inquiry committee headed by the Counter-Terrorism Department AIG established their involvement in the crime.
