Coke Studio-Season 10’s rendition to ‘Sayonee’ didn’t leave everyone to happy, and it isn’t hard to figure out why. Rahat Fateh Ali Khan wasn’t the best choice for the chorus of a rock band’s most popular song, Junoon’s ‘Sayonee’.
Whilst Ali Noor did a fairly good job with the high notes & the low ones in the stanzas, Rahat made it all seem too easy, and that’s not at all what a rock song is about. The imperfection in the notes is what it’s all about, the rasp and the ruggedness is what appeals most to us, if one truly is a lover of rock music.
Although Rahat Fateh Ali Khan is one of the most exceptional singers we have in the country, and of course, a national treasure after the demise of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, he fails to take us on the ‘goosebump journey’ that Ali Azmat took us, every time we played the song in our cars.
A lot of people had their reservations on choosing Ali Noor for the song too, which we think isn’t fair since he sang his parts perfectly and we loved his bits and pieces.
