Married bride attempts to tie knot for second time; Police arrest Nikah witness

ISLAMABAD: Police have arrested a man who allegedly served as a witness on a marriage certificate for a ‘bride’ who was already married to another man.

Koral police booked Sajid Safeer on June 11 for allegedly marrying Khizra Saqib, on the complaint of her brother-in-law Adil Jahangir. The couple had allegedly contracted a marriage in violation of Pakistani law, which allows women to be married to only one man at a time.

The police on Wednesday also arrested Tazeem Hussain, Safeer’s brother, for signing the marriage certificate and produced him before Judicial Magistrate Mujahid Rahim on Friday, requesting a seven-day physical remand. The court, however, only allowed one-day physical remand and directed the police to produce the suspect before the it once again on Saturday.

Koral SHO Abdur Rauf Kiani said the ‘authenticity’ of the second marriage had not been established yet, but even if the certificate was ‘authentic’, it would have no legal standing as polyandry was not legal in Pakistan.
