Pakistan desirous of peace but no compromise on territorial integrity, FM Qureshi informs Mike Pompeo

ISLAMABAD – Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi had a telephonic contact with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo wherein the minister apprised the US official about the violation of Line of Control by India.

“Pakistan is desirous of peace in the region, but will not compromise on its territorial integrity,” Qureshi informed the US counterpart in clear-worded remarks on Tuesday.

Qureshi told Pompeo that India was jeopardizing the peace in South Asia for its political purposes and elections and Pakistan has already conveyed Indian designs to the international community.

Qureshi informed Pompeo about the sentiments of the Pakistani government, parliament and the people over the flagrant violation of international norms.

The foreign minister also warned that Indian aggression can disturb joint efforts to establish peace in Afghanistan to end the long-standing war.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi condemned the Indian aggression and expressed hope that the US will play its role in this regard.

Indian air force violated the Line of Control in the wee hours of Tuesday before being whisked away by fighter jets of Pakistan air force in the Balakot area.

India claimed to have targeted the alleged camps of militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) in the Balakot area near the Line of Control; however, Pakistan has denied any such attack.

The alleged strikes – which are still to be verified – have escalated tension between the two nuclear-armed neighbours as Pakistan’s armed forces have announced that Pakistan will respond against Indian aggression in a befitting and surprising manner.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Imran Khan convened a meeting of the National Security Committee in the aftermath of surgical strike reports and made it clear that Pakistan will respond to Indian aggression at time and place of its choosing.

The NSC meeting, chaired by the premier in the wake of India’s violation of the Line of Control (LoC), was attended by the top civil and military leadership, including Army Chief General Qamar Jawed Bajwa and ministers of defence and foreign affairs.
