Knife-wielding woman kills 2 children, injures 12 at China school

BEIJING – A woman wielding a knife on Friday attacked minor students at the gate of a kindergarten in China´s southwestern city of Chongqing, leaving 2 dead and 12 injured, local media reported.

The attacker identified as 39-year-old Liu launched the attack when children were returning from morning exercise at 9:30 am local time.

School security guards and staff managed to overpower the women. Video from the scene appeared to show angry onlookers thrashing the attacker after catching it.

Following the incident, the injured students were shifted to hospital from treatment where two of them succumb to their injuries.

The suspect is now in the custody of the police while an investigation has been launched to trace the motives behind the attack.

The ration of violent crime is less in China as compared to many other countries, but there has been a series of knife and axe attacks, mostly targeting children, in recent years. The use of knives in the attack is common as there is strict gun control law in China.

In September, China hanged a man who had killed nine students and injured 11 others in a knife attack at a middle school in the central province of Shaanxi.
