ISLAMABAD – The opposition parties, except Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), nominated Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for presidential elections, on Monday.
The MMA leader filed his papers before the Islamabad High Court through party leader Abdul Ghafoor Haideri while PML-N’s Amir Muqam is his covering candidate.
Talking to newsmen, former interior minister and PML-N leader Ahsan Iqbal expressed that the PPP had agreed to propose three names for the slot, however, stuck to Aitzaz Ahsan’s name later.
He, however, expressed that the leadership of PPP would be contacted again.
Earlier, Pakistan Peoples Party leader, Aitzaz Ahsan filed his nomination papers for the presidential elections, confirming a fissure in the ranks of the opposition which had earlier vowed to field a joint candidate.
A deadlock persisted between PML-N and PPP after Asif Ali Zardari stuck to the name of Ahsan despite reservations shown by Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz over his candidacy.
