Sharifs including Maryam Nawaz arrive at Kot Lakhpat jail to meet Nawaz

LAHORE – The members of Sharif family arrived at the Kot Lakhpat jail on Thursday to meet former prime minister Nawaz Sharif.

Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shehbaz and Shameem Akhter (mother of Nawaz Sharif) were among the visitors who arrived at the facility housing the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz leader convicted in the Al-Azizia reference.

Nawaz Sharif was sentenced to seven years in prison in the Al-Azizia reference by an accountability court in Islamabad while he was acquitted in the Flagship reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB); the references were filed in line with the directives of the Supreme Court in the Panama Papers case.

Sharif was taken into custody from the courtroom on Monday and was to be imprisoned in the Adiala jail, however, his request to be incarcerated in the Kot Lakhpat jail in Lahore was approved.

Sharif has been allotted the number 4470 in the jail where his brother Shehbaz Sharif is also imprisoned in a corruption case regarding the Ashiana-i-Iqbal society, however, currently is in Islamabad on production orders issued by Speaker National Assembly Asad Qaiser.

Apart from family members, senior leaders of PML-N including former speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, former Punjab Assembly speaker Rana Iqbal, and Rana Tanveer also arrived at the jail.

The former premier would be required to give permission to those who wish to meet him; Thursday has been reserved as a meeting day.
