PPP meets for last-ditch efforts to field joint presidential candidate

ISLAMABAD – Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari has summoned a party meeting today to discuss cooperation sought by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rahman for a joint presidential candidate.

The party leaders will meet at 5 pm to take a final decision on the presidential candidate.

The meeting follows a huddle between JUI-F chief and former president Asif Zardari in which Fazl requested the PPP leader to withdraw the name of Aitzaz Ahsan for the slot of the president.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman submitted his nomination papers for the presidential election to be held on September 4 hours after Aitzaz Ahsan of Pakistan Peoples Party filed his papers.

During the Monday’s meeting, Fazl also told the former president that except PPP, all opposition parties were backing him for the office of the country’s president.

He also disclosed that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) objected to Ahsan’s candidacy owing to his remarks passed in recent months over the Panama Papers case and the ailment of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz.

He also said that if the opposition remained divided then the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s candidate Dr Arif Alvi will benefit and would sail through the election process smoothly.

Fazl, Ahsan and PTI’s Arif Alvi have submitted their nomination papers for the presidential elections and if the opposition fails to field a joint candidate, Alvi’s victory would be a sure shot development.

The presidential elections are scheduled on September 4 while the new president would replace incumbent Mamnoon Hussain on September 9.

The president is elected by an electoral college comprising members of the Senate, National Assembly, and four provincial assemblies.
