Karachi runs dry as major water pipeline bursts

THATTA – Citizens of Karachi are facing acute shortage of water as water supply to many areas was suspended on Thursday after a major pipeline burst at the Dhabeji Pumping Station.

The executive engineer at the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board said the repairing of 72-inch diameter pipeline is underway, adding that the incident happened due to back pressure following power break down.

An acute shortage of water also marred the metropolis following a drastic drop in water levels at the Hub dam, one of the main sources of water for Karachi.

Another major source is Keenjhar lake (Indus River), from where water is pumped through three main bulk pumping stations located at Dhabeji, Gharo, and Hub.
