Thousands protest against currency policy across India

DELHI – Thousands of people demonstrated across the country on Monday to protest the government’s sudden decision to withdraw large-denomination currency from circulation.

The government move caused enormous hardship to millions of people in the country after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that 500- and 1,000-rupee notes will be replaced by the new currency.

The surprise decision resulted in serpentine lines at banks.

In Kerala, buses and cars stopped plying the roads and businesses and shops closed.

Communist Party of India said the decision has caused unprecedented financial turmoil in the country.
