NEW DELHI – In a shocking incident, an eight-month-old baby girl has been raped allegedly by her 27-year-old cousin in the Indian capital, Delhi.
The incident happened on Sunday in West Delhi’s Subhash Nagar but it was reported by local media on Monday. Police claimed to have arrested the accused, Suraj, who went missing soon after the incident.
The minor girl, who received “horrific” injuries, was brought to the hospital on Sunday where she had undergone a long surgery. A medical report has confirmed that she had been raped.
According to the police, the accused, who has been identified as the first cousin of the child and lived in the same building, has confessed to the crime.
Police said that the minor, whose father is a labourer and mother is also a maid, was alone at home. When her mother returned to the home she found the child unconscious lying in a pool of blood.
Her sister-in-law, who was supposed to baby-sit, said the child’s cousin was playing with her for a while.
Police said that accused Suraj took the child to the other part of the building on the pretext of playing with her and raped her.
ANI news quoted victim’s father as “I had left for work leaving my children at home. My wife works too. So she too left for work soon after. When she came back, she saw blood-soaked bed & clothes of the child. When she told this to her sister-in-law she made excuses. My child is in critical condition now.”
After the incident, the parents lodged a case against the accused under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences or POCSO and other sections of Indian Penal code.
