ISLAMABAD – The six-member Joint Investigation Team formulated to probe into Sharif family’s offshore assets has summoned Qatari Prince Hamad bin Jassim bin Jaber al Thani for the second time.
According to a report by Express Tribune, the Pakistani Embassy in Qatar delivered another letter of the Joint Investigation Team to Qatari Prince on Tuesday.
Jaber al-Thani had come to the rescue of the ruling family during the Panama case hearing in the apex court in November last year.
The Qatari prince in question had forwarded a letter during the proceedings in supreme court last year in which he stated that the London flats were gifted by Qatari royal family.
The letter addressing the apex court states that in 1980, Mian Muhammad Sharif (Nawaz Sharif’s father) invested 12 million Dirhams in the Al Thani company belonging to the Qatari prince’s father. “In the year 2006, the accounts in relation to the above investment were settled between Hussain Nawaz Sharif and Al Thani family, who then delivered the bearer shares of the companies referred in para 4 above to a representative of Hussain Nawaz Sharif,” the letter read.

Reportedly, the first letter by the JIT had been delivered to the Qatari prince on May 18 wherein he was asked to record his statement. Prince Jassim al-Thani had reportedly responded saying he was willing to record his statement through a video link.
However, after the top court on Monday asked the JIT to disregard the Qatari prince’s letter if he did not appear in person before them, the investigating body sent him another letter to personally appear for recording his statement.
The supreme court in its April 20 judgment had set aside the said letter that apparently was the fundamental point of Sharif family’s money trail.
It bears mentioning that the JIT has paced up its proceedings as it has to wind up the probe in a span of total 60 days, out of which one-fourth have already passed.
The investigative authority summoned premier’s elder son Hussain Nawaz on Sunday and Tuesday in connection with the Panama papers judgment. Hussain was grilled for around four hours to dig out the truth regarding London flats and offshore firms.
It is highly likely that more members of Sharif family would be summoned by the JIT in coming days.
