Iranian foreign minister reaches Pakistan on second visit in PTI govt

ISLAMABAD – Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif landed in Pakistan Wednesday morning to hold key talks.

This marks the second visit by the Iranian foreign minister to Islamabad since the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) formed the government.

Zarif is expected to meet his Pakistani counterpart, Shah Mehmood Qureshi. He will also call on the prime minister to discuss various matters.

The high profile Iranian visit comes days after the Pakistani premier returned from Saudi Arabia with a $3 billion bailout package. PM Imran after wrapping the tour addressed the nation and expressed willingness to play a role of mediator to end the Yemen crisis where Saudi alliance-backed Yemeni government is fighting against Houthi rebels for past few years.

As the Yemeni government claimed that the Houthis are supported by Iran, it is likely that talks about the Yemen issue will be discussed between the Iranian foreign minister and Pakistani officials today.

It is expected that both sides will also talk about the 12 abducted security officials of Iran who were kidnapped near Pak-Iran border earlier this month.

Zarif previously arrived in Pakistan on August 31 when he held a meeting with PM Khan and army officials to discuss bilateral relations and regional security.

Khan had said the two countries enjoy historical and religious relations and that the people of both countries needed to extend cooperation in different fields.
