Fear of none: PFA teams seal canteens of Punjab University, NCA and FCC

LAHORE (Ihsan Qadir) – The Punjab Food Authority (PFA) raided and sealed canteens of Punjab University and National College of Arts (NCA) due to unhygienic conditions, poor personal hygiene , no medicals of food handlers, dirty and broken freezers, spoiled fruit, foul smell in freezers, leftover food and insects in water and juice.

According to Facebook page of the Punjab Food Authority (PFA), Samnabad region team of PFA during the raid and imposed Rs 10,000 fine on the owners of the canteens.

The sealed Punjab university canteens include:
1. Uncle Samosa Shop located in Main Shopping Plaza
2. Bashir Juice Corner in Main Cafeteria of Admin Block
3. Ahmad Fast Food at hostel No 4 stop
4) Saleem Tikka Shop at Hostel No 4 Stop
5. Snack Bar Canteen in Main Shopping Center due to no food license..no medicals of workers..poor personal hygiene…broken freezer..spoiled fruit…dirty and broken freezer…foul smell in freezers..leftover food…insects in water n juice. Cut vegetables at foot level.
6) Sanko Fast Food at Hostel No 4

Moreover, according to personal Facebook page of the PFA Director Ayesha Mumtaz, Data Gunj Baksh Town region team of PFA raided and sealed “National College of Arts” Mall Road cafeteria due to unhygienic conditions, poor personal hygiene , no medicals of food handlers, expired jellies, and cakes with no expiry on pizzas and shawarmas.

The Punjab Food Authority has been established under the “Punjab Food Authority Act 2011” to ensure availability of safe and wholesome food for human consumption.

Its basic purpose is to lay out standards for food articles and to regulate their manufacturing, storage, distribution, sale and import.

The PFA teams have also sealed canteens of Government College University (GCU) Lahore, Forman Christian College, M A College and Punjab College in Lahore due to poor hygiene.

In an interview with daily ‘Daily Pakistan Global’, Punjab Food Authority Director Operations Ayesha Mumtaz said that she would not accept any kind of pressure in her job and would continue her work as per the law.

“I will continue my job with the same spirit without any fear and favour in the future.

I have fear of none,” she said, adding: “Pure and hygienic food is the right of citizens at hotels and restaurants and PFA will not let any hotel owner to deprive citizens of their basic right.”

Iron-lady Ayesha Mumtaz has got praise from all quarters by raiding top hotels and restaurants of mighty owners in Lahore from Pearl Continental to Avari and Hardee’s.

Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also praised her good work. Following the good work of PFA, the federal government is also planning to launch such authority in the centre and wants services of Ayesha Mumtaz.

At the same time, there are reports that PFA teams only raids those hotels and restaurants which refuses to pay monthly as a bribe to the team led by Ayesha Mumtaz.

Some critics have challenged the method of Ayesha Mumtaz’s raiding team which is not upto the standard procedures since its teams lacks training of checking the food.
